Hm. What’s going on here
Susan Sontag has this nice line where she’s like, I became a writer because I wanted every type of life.
Kitchen Counter is about philosophy and art and sport and also potatoes. I want what appears here to reflect the life I hope to live – one that is curious and broad and kind.
So I’m trying to understand the world, and how it could be better, just like you are. My approach is an omnivore’s diet of policy and poetry, politics and pop culture. I’m pretty certain you won’t find quite the same mix of topics anywhere else on the internet.
I don’t know what any of that means
Fine, I’ll be concrete. Here’s a selection of things readers have found in their inbox:
Notes on AI; Notes on Art – a piece about how it feels to be alive today
Shape and Spin – an obituary, but really it’s about the geometry of sport
Being in Pain – a personal essay about pain and the distance between us
Who is a capitalist? – I join the pundit wars and take on Matt Yglesias
The White Sea – a short story. Yes! There’s even fiction!
But why “Kitchen Counter”
Because my surname is Kitchen. Yes, I know.
Okay okay. What now?
