Charlie Kirk got killed because he was a hate mongering fascist. While I am in favor of gun control he deserved what he got and I can’t help but feel the world is slightly better without him in it. Sorry not sorry fascists should stop breathing.
I wonder if Americans just believe that if you tried to ‘take a gun off someone’ you’d get shot in the face by them. They seem to have a bigger sense of ‘entitlement’ than most Australians. Very different worlds.
Besides the possibility that Kirk was merked to simply divide us yet again on bullshit and distract from the same day actions of Israel; you simply cannot argue that it's remotely possible to pass gun reform laws here, without coming from a gun safety, mental health angle. Our issues are much deeper than guns. If there weren't guns, there'd still be rope, and lynchings are STILL happening to this day to black folks all over. Amerika was founded by a mixture European societal rejects with mental illness or religious beliefs that couldn't mesh with culture there. Add that to a place with vast tracts of land filled with ripe targets for sociopathic violence and murder, and it attracted and fomented generations of violent tendencies in white males. Who, if we're being honest and fair, is who should be prevented from owning guns, given the extremely high percentage of mass shootings alone attributable to that demographic.
You wanna change things? Quit buying the lines fed by the establishment and get to know people everywhere, who own guns. White, black, Asian, Native. Guns aren't going anywhere and the continued dithering over this is as useless as the abortion front. These are hotbutton issues harped on precisely because they divide and stoke fear.
I would not entirely place all the blame on the stale white males, women can equally contribute.
Aotearoa/ New Zealand by the very bi cultural title for our Country has come some way in addressing colonialism. The entitlement of the great white race has little comparison and still exists in our society.
The integration of Maori culture and language of the past few decades has a start to create a more integrated society. The Boomers will pass into history and future generations are already showing a willingness to see the wrongs of the past laid to rest with them.
Violence does exist, but similarly to Alister's account of Victoria in Australia gun laws have been significantly tightened and outside of the hunting community and some gang violence little need is seen for firearms.
A lot of violence was directed at Maori when colonisers in the 19th century chose to deprive them of their lands.
The patience of Maori in working since to restore through the Courts and Govt some of what was theirs and in the continued belief of their culture, showed great strength.
Admirable qualities.
Unlike Palestine having the injustice of Israel to contend with and their blood is modern colonialism, totally supported by the US which is to a large part a failed democracy.
Sense, cents and sensibility, a society so often manifesting everything that is wrong in a civilized nation. I agree with the French politician that the US should return the statue of liberty,
Excellent piece. The lack of comparative thinking, knowledge or analysis has long held the US back.
Good piece.
